The much-anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine delivered a perfect blend of humor, action, and raw emotion that fans have been waiting for since 2017’s Logan. The film pits the witty, fourth wall breaking, irreverent Deadpool with the stoic, angry, and rageful Wolverine, creating a dynamic that is hilarious as it is explosive. Directed by Shawn Levy, the movie combines the R-rated humor of the Deadpool franchise with the dark and raw emotion that made the film Logan a masterpiece. While the film leans mostly on its colorful absurdity, it also manages to ground itself in a surprisingly heartfelt story about Redemption, survival, and friendships.
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are once again in their top form, reprising their iconic roles with their real-life friendship with palpable chemistry. Reynolds’ Deadpool is outrageous and self-aware as ever, with a barrage of meta jokes and pop culture references that border on excessive but never fail to bring out laughter. Jackman on the other hand brings a nuanced performance as Wolverine, battling with inner demons while being stuck with the jesting Deadpool. The interplay between their characters is the heart of the film, offering both comedy, unexpected cameos–and sometimes both in one sharp swoop.
The action sequences are a spectacle that blends Wolverine’s violent, visceral, claw-slashing brutality with Deadpool’s over-the-top style. The fight choreography is creative as it is fun. However, as with many movies the film has its problems with pacing and tonal shifts. The balance between comedy and drama may feel somewhat uneven to a viewer with some unnecessary jokes, but the dialogue is highly well written, and there’s even the drop of a choir remix of Madonna’s “Prayer” song.
Overall, Deadpool & Wolverine is a wild ride that encapsulates everything a comic book fan and average movie viewer can enjoy. It may not reach the emotion of Logan or the creative narrative that was the first Deadpool film and it has a ton of fan-service for the knowledgeable comic fan.
With numerous scenes of graphic violence, over 100 uses of the F-bomb, and plenty of sex jokes, this is not conventional Disney or Marvel fare, and not the film your mom will want to show your kid brother or sister. That said, it delivers for those who have long dreamed of seeing these two iconic comic book characters share the screen together in a bloody, hilarious, glory. This film is a dream come true.
