NSHS Dance Department Preview Gets to the “CORE” for Student Audience

Tickets for the Wednesday 4/22 and Thursday 4/23 Springs Dance “CORE” show are on sale now!

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, students were treated to a sneak peek of the NSHS Dance show, dubbed “CORE: Movement Ignites with Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts.”

The sneak peek was organized by students on the Production Assistant team where all dance students learn the process of show-making. Knowing that many students might not be able to attend the full shows due to upcoming EOC and AP testing, the dance department wanted to showcase the work they have done in collaboration with other departments throughout the year and give students a taste of what they might miss.

Dances included previews of:

Senior solo inspired by the Psychology of overthinking.
NS Dance Company choreographed by a future physician based on patterns in Math.
Multiple ELA dances based on the fall dance show theme of storytelling.
World Language.
The 11th Grade ELA and History project influenced by the Chicago Riots of 1919 (a dance that Ms. Noble says, “has her heart.”

In an email to staff, Ms. Noble made a special point of noting her gratitude and thanks to her colleagues who collaborated with her program. “Thank you to every single teacher who took the time to collaborate with me this year. This was a huge endeavor, and I am most proud of my students for taking on the task of higher-order thinking within this beautiful artform of movement…Please come out to one of our shows next week as we celebrate art, movement, and academia.”

The Oracle staff attended the preview and shared their thoughts:

“The dances expressed forms of art, math, science, psychology, and ELA. The dancers used dance as a way to express these topics to other students in a fun and diverse way that I liked. Teaching important topics in a fun way is what I think is a good idea, and could maybe improve the way others learn by watching other students engage in learning or, if their friends participated, watch them do something that is beautiful and fun. They also provided funny moments in between, and did a Q and A trivia that was a creative way to get free tickets out for students. Overall, the showcase was really good and fun. It was a good tactic to get others to watch what they had prepared for the actual showcase.”

“The spring show [looks] amazing. Everyone danced well and told their story. One story, in fact, was shown phenomenally. It [involved] two people who wanted each other but couldn’t get each other. This dance spoke to me because this is a very common problem that most of us can relate to. Also, the dancers fully embraced the concept. The synchronization and the opposition was amazing. One part of the dance that spoke to me was when they were in front of each other, and they were placing their hands like mimes. Right then, I saw that they were truly synchronized, and the music just enhanced the ambiance. I believe they really embraced the feeling of wanting and restriction. Overall, it is a beautiful piece.”

“I enjoyed the dance performance. My personal favorite was the one where they danced to a Kendrick Lamar song, which I believe was “Alright.” Kendrick Lamar is one of my favorite music artists, and seeing his music be shown through an art form such as dance was very cool to me. I think their dancing fit the tone of the song well; it felt very fun, but you can tell they were very much putting their all into the performance. Overall, I think the performance was good, and I’d like to go to another one in the future.”

“[When] I watched that dance about the desk, it was about the struggles of school in and out: Navigating class work, finding friends, pushing through the halls, and homework, and so much more. To me, the dance was about how hard all those things were and how we persevere through it [and that] at the end of the day, we do make it through and win. That we always rise to the challenge and beat it every day. Overall, I really liked this dance, and I could feel the emotions put into it.”

“I really enjoyed the preview I saw of the dance show this year! Lots of talent on display and lots of fun dances…[One] in particular is the one with the two lovers bumping into one another in the street. I really enjoyed how in sync the two of them were. It shows the compatibility that may have led to them dating in the first place. Plus, it’s a very creative concept for a dance. I think tenuous social situations can absolutely be compared to a dance, with each person performing their part as best they can in hopes of getting their desired response from the other person.”
