Breaking News: Student Protest at North Springs

On Thursday, January 29th, the North Springs school administration sent an email to the North Springs community about a student protest being planned for the morning of January 30th. The text of this message is published below the photo and video of this morning’s protest.

Good afternoon North Springs Spartan Community.

I wanted to let you know that tomorrow, Friday, 1/30, we are expecting a student protest at North Springs. I want to share with you a little bit about what has been communicated to us by the student leaders and how we have prepared for this potential activity.

To start with, Fulton County Schools respects students’ rights to free expression and encourages thoughtful, respectful civic engagement.

North Springs does not endorse or oppose the protest activity the students are expressing their opinions about. However, as part of our district guidelines, the role of the school is to ensure that we maximize our student instructional time, ensure that students are safe on campus and are following the FCS Code of Student Conduct and school rules.

Student leaders have asked for an opportunity to host a walk-out to protest the U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement activities happening in our country. I have spoken with the student leaders involved to provide them with an appropriate time to host their peaceful demonstration. As we have talked about the timing of this protest and the impact to the school instructional day, students have agreed to conduct their protest from 7:30-8:20 at the front of the school along Dalrymple Road. This allows students to share their cause but also keeps this from impacting the instructional day. After 8:20, we expect students to be in the building and in class following normal B-day routines. Students coming back to the building late will be marked tardy or absent. Students that arrive to school and are not interested in participating will come directly into the building and follow a normal routine when they arrive.

The time from 7:30 to 8:20 is the only time that has been approved for this protest. Disrupting class, leaving campus or class without permission, or participating in a walkout during the school day aside from the agreed upon time and day will result in consequences consistent with district policy and the Student Code of Conduct, including the revocation or privileges, and up to out of school suspension.

I appreciate our community support in helping our students make good decisions tomorrow and in the future.
