In honor of the two-year mark of Breonna Taylors death this past Sunday, and the ten-year mark of Trayvon Martins death on February 26th, 2012, here is an extremely brief list of young black people who have been murdered at the hands of police, and black youth murdered by people within their own communities and have such become victims of America’s racism.
Here are their names, ages, and the reason they were murdered.
Breonna Taylor, 26, sleeping.
Trayvon Martin, 17, walking home with Skittles.
Daunte Wright, 20, was driving with an air freshener in his car.
Atatiana Jefferson, 28, being at home.
Stephon Clark, 22, being at his grandmother’s home.
Botham Jean, 26, eating ice cream, at home.
Janisha Fonville, 20, being at home.
Akai Gurley, 20, walking down the stairs.
Tamir Rice, 12, playing with a toy.
Michael Brown, 18, walking with a friend.
Ahmaud Arbery, 25, going for a jog.
Vincent Belmonte, 18, driving
Aiyana Jones, 7, sleeping.
Now, a list of their murders by name, and time spent in prison for their crimes.
Brett Hankinson spent no time in prison for the murder of Breonna Taylor.
George Zimmerman spent no time in prison for the murder of Trayvon Martin.
Kim Potter was sentenced to 16 months in prison for the murder of Daunte Wright. Less than two years.
Aaron Dean has spent no time prison for the murder of Atatiana Jefferson, but a case will begin in May 2022.
Jared Robinet and Terrence Mercadal spent no time in prison for the murder of Stephon Clark.
Amber Guyger was sentenced to ten years in prison for the murder of Botham Jean.
Anthony Holzhauer has spent no time in prison for the murder of Janisha Fonville.
Peter Liang has spent no time in prison for the murder of Akai Gurley.
Timothy Leoham has not served prison time for murdering Tamir Rice.
Daren Wilson has not served any time for the murder of Michael Brown Jr.
Travis McMicahel has been charged and is serving life in prison for the murder of Ahmaud Arbery.
Larry McDonald has not been sentenced to any prison time for the murder of Vincent Belmonte.
Joseph Weekley has not been charged with the murder of Aiyana Jones.
Black people are still dying. Black youth are still dying.
“Although half of the people shot and killed by police are White, Black Americans are shot at a disproportionate rate. They account for less than 13 percent of the U.S. population but are killed by police at more than twice the rate of White Americans. Hispanic Americans are also killed by police at a disproportionate rate.” – The Washington Post
Just because stories are not shared, and hashtags are not floating around, does not mean that black children, black youth, and black people are not being murdered. It just means were doing a better job at hiding the stories.
