North Springs Homecoming 2021: Casino Night

North Springs welcomes back its’ students with a casino themed homecoming, and with the unused funds from last year, we all expect a blast! But while most students are excited for a chance to dance, some students have their concerns regarding dress code regulations, and effects the corona virus will have.
The principle recently sent an email to all students concerning the homecoming rules. “Students that have been given ISS, OSS, or have been sent to PEAK are ineligible to attend Homecoming.” That’s about 20-30 students per month, so it may put a stagger in participation. “We see a lot of repeat offenders.” stated the assistant principle of North Springs. I could expound on and on about how it may not seem like a vast majority, but how its primarily about popularity and influence.
Staff and Administration don’t have special covid restrictions (which may be worrisome), but there is the necessary mask requirement (optional when dancing and eating) which is the equivalent of the regular Covid rules enforced in the hallways of the school. So the result of practically no masks, and a crowded room full of teenagers is high in contagion and germs.
Nevertheless, students are given the option of bringing an outside guest to the homecoming dance despite covid concerns. If they choose to bring an outside guest they must complete and submit the guest permission (application) form by October 20th. In which only completed forms will be accepted who follow the following guidelines. The intending guest must be in High School and no older than 19 are to attend. There must be either a student school ID or a Drivers license attached to the application. Tickets must not be purchased for the guest until the form is returned to the school. Despite the requirements this year this is a massive enhancement to the previous year.
Yet the dress code stands similarly to our day-to-day dress code. Things that would be considered “revealing or see through” should not be worn (such as long V cuts or mid drifts). Anything short or tight that would expose any body parts would be a violation to the district dress code. Hats or items that would cover a students’ head are also to be avoided.
This dress code could also cause problems. I know at least two students who spent good money on a dress that they now have to change because the school district finds V-lines or mid-drifts inappropriate, even though they chose a theme called “Casino Night”. Just like the regular school dress code, this rule objectifies and sexualizes teenagers in ways a safe learning environment shouldn’t even think of. “It started with the inability to wear high heels and now this. Me and many others are extremely upset not only because most of us had already had to buy dresses with wasted money but because now, it will be even harder to find a dress with rules this strict.” Senior Hannah Bright states. This also creates yet another problem in theoretical participation of the event.
On a bright side we do get to continue our Prep-Rally this Friday, October 22nd to celebrate our talented fall athletes. Running on an A Day modified schedule. Starting at 2:30 and ending of the school day on an exciting note to prepare students for the game that awaits in the afternoon!
